Ninety Six Primary IB program

First graders at Ninety Six Primary kicked off their first IB unit, Who We Are in Place and Time, by allowing first graders to dress up as “stars”  and the special persons they are.  Students and staff members enjoyed this activity, and it was an excellent way to introduce our first IB unit.  For more information concerning the Ninety Six Primary IB program, please contact the school.

Ninety Six looks to improve

NINETY SIX - Forgive Ninety Six High School football coach Chris Liner for not sugarcoating things.
His team is coming off an ugly home loss to Emerald to open the season and tonight faces a Broome team looking to quickly rebuild under first-year coach Jet Turner.
When the teams kick off at 7:30 at Ninety Six's Wilson-Campbell Stadium, the Wildcats will face the same run-heavy Wing-T offense Turner ran at Ware Shoals and Clover, which could be a problem if they tackle like they did against the Vikings.
"Obviously last week, we stunk," Liner said. "But you can't live in the past. This week, we hope to be a heck of a lot better and next week, and we want to be playing great football by the end of the year."
Ninety Six (0-1 overall) gave up 326 rushing yards on 8.8 yards per carry against Emerald. Liner said early in the week safety/wide receiver Marquise Williams hurt his knee in the game and middle linebacker Eddie Emery burned his foot during the weekend.
This Broome team is only in its first few games with Turner, but has already shown it's adept at running the ball in a loss to Chesnee and shutout win against Landrum. Wingbacks Eli Gist and Cameron Dawkins have taken the main ball-carrying duties with 385 yards and three touchdowns in the first two games. Quarterback Corey Bennett coordinates the offense.
Liner said he was impressed by the discipline and sound tackling of the Centurions 3-5 defense, anchored by linebacker Bauveir Jackson and free safety Pat Foster.

WARE SHOALS - With her team trailing early, Ninety Six High School volleyball coach Beth Miller got up off the bench, walked toward the sideline and seemed destined to call a timeout - or at least shout instructions to her players.
Instead, Miller did nothing and let her Wildcats play.
Eventually, Ninety Six erased a six-point deficit to win the first set en route to a three-set sweep against Ware Shoals 25- 20, 25-5, 25-8 on the road Thursday.
"I'm trying to see if they can get themselves out of a hole," Miller said. "We're growing and I'm trying to coach them up. It's like I told them on a timeout, 'I want to see you make things happen instead of what they are doing.' Just trying to see if they can grow up and put their big-girl panties on and pull themselves out of a hole."
Ware Shoals broke a 4-all tie with eight of the next 10 points, which nearly prompted Miller to take action. But then, the Wildcats (2-0 overall) notched three consecutive points, capped off by a kill from Shyann Luster, to force Ware Shoals coach Patricia Wirszyla to call a timeout.
Ninety Six, later, recorded nine of the final 10 points to claim the first set.
"We just weren't off the bus yet, we were still tired," Ninety Six's Anna Grace Bryant said of the slow start. "We weren't very, like, relax, we're just all uptight and we weren't ready to play. But then we got ready to play."

Booker in the spotlight for Wildcats

By BEN BREINER

NINETY SIX -- Chris Liner wasted little time getting to a central point when he started talking about his top wide receiver, Ryan Booker.
The Ninety Six High School football coach said Booker no longer had the opportunity to work behind departed, productive players such as Dante Pride, Karl Mingo or Corey Downs. They no longer surround him on offense, and as the No. 1 receiver, Booker has to be "that guy."
"This year, he's kind of in the spotlight," Liner said. "We talked about that a lot in our team meeting on Sunday, how we've got some guys now that they're the Dante, they're the Karl, they're some of the ones that we've depended on over the years to make a lot of plays for us.

"That's a whole different mindset for a kid that's never been the focal point before."
Booker certainly has the tools to be a focal point of Ninety Six's rebuilt offense, and he emerged late last season as one of the top receiving threats in the area. Although his role has increased, the soft-spoken junior hardly seemed to take ownership of it when asked how his responsibilities increased.
"I'm sure it has," Booker said. "Probably being a go-to wide receiver. People may see me as a threat, so I'm sure my role has grown."
He's coming off a season where he started as the team's third receiver, but had the promise to do far more. He took the 2010 season, his freshman year, off from football, and when he came out, he offered his quarterbacks a big, speedy 6-foot-2 target.

NINETY SIX, SC – Greenwood School District 52 officially dedicated their new combination Ninety Six High School/Edgewood Middle School on Sunday afternoon, opening their doors to hundreds students, future students, their families and the rest of the Ninety Six community.
The new 180,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility represents the culmination of four years of blood, sweat and tears from everyone involved in the two schools, from the school board all the way down to the last incoming sixth-grader at Edgewood.
“Today is a good day,” Ninety Six principal Rex Ward told GwdToday. “Everything has been building toward today and the first day of school. I’m glad it’s finally here.”
The new facility is two schools in one, with a dividing point in the cafeteria which has a retractable wall to separate the middle school from the high school. There is wireless internet throughout the entire school and smart boards – dry erase boards that double as computer monitors and connect to the internet – in every classroom. The two schools have separate entrances and gymnasiums.
County Council District Two representative Mark Allison was on hand for the dedication. “Ninety Six really needed two new schools,” Allison told GwdToday while admiring the middle school gym. “It’s nice to have these facilities here in Ninety Six to help better prepare our students for the challenges they’ll face in today’s world.”

New faces to step up for Wildcats

New faces to step up for Wildcats
Ninety Six volleyball team moves up to Class AA this season

By BEN BREINER

NINETY SIX - Great players come and go at Ninety Six High School, but losing them does not seem to trouble Wildcats coach Beth Miller. She preaches what she calls The Wildcat Way, and with the team losing a strong group of seniors, including two-time Lakelands Player of the Year Jenny Bailey, and moving up to Class AA, Miller made it known the goals and expectations haven't changed a bit.
"We've had other great volleyball players here in this school district, and somebody's always stepped up and took the challenge and done what they're supposed to do," Miller said.
This season, the burden of stepping up will likely fall heavily on Anna-Grace Bryant and Quasha Williams, juniors who played important roles on a 2011 team which won the program's 11th consecutive region title. The team loses Bailey, Chandler Hepler and setter Dee Thompson, but brings back a large junior-laden roster.
Although Miller said new faces will step up as usual, the process is not always so easy for the players.
"I guess it's hard trying to be like Jenny Bailey because she's kind of hard to, like, compare to because she was a really good leader," Bryant said. "It's just hard trying to be like her. Especially when you're trying to ... work together and just step up as a team."
Williams took a more forward-thinking outlook and added, "We got replacements for our old people. Just go out here and play."
The team returns only two seniors - Megan Pruitt and Kaylee Deason - and Miller said it was a larger group than she was used to. The coach also mentioned Garielle Mingo, who is still getting a feel for the game, and 5-foot-11 Florida transfer Shyann Lister as players who could become key cogs this season.

NINETY SIX - The first day of school complete, sophomore Hunter May quipped he missed the old Ninety Six High School, with its condemned wing and portable classrooms.
"I will miss the trailer park," May said, a smile on his face. "It's not Ninety Six without the trailer park."
Welcome to the new Ninety Six.
The combination middle school/high school hosted its first students Wednesday, a day Ninety Six administrators said had typical first-day hiccups, but overall, ran as smooth as expected.
Students who arrived at the school - after enduring a traffic jam at South Cambridge Street and Johnston Road, an issue that will persist with four schools so closely located - found an educational institution replete with technological advancements seldom seen.
Schoolwide Wi-Fi? Check.
Multiple plug-ins? Check.
Flat-screen televisions? Check.
State-of-the-art science labs, an enormous viewing screen in the cafeteria/auditorium, Promethean boards in every classroom, a spacious, non-carpeted gym? Check. Check. Check. Check.
But for some students, such as freshman Kaylee White, the simple things, especially coming from old Edgewood Middle, were nice.

Chaney in mix for 'Cats

No. 2 QB moves to wide receiver
Jo-Jo Chaney
Jo-Jo Chaney

By SCOTT CHANCEY

NINETY SIX - Ninety Six High School's Jo-Jo Chaney has craved making the big hit.

Now, he has a chance to make the big catch.
After starting at cornerback and mostly waiting behind starting quarterback Hunter Watson last season, a change in philosophy gives Chaney opportunities to become Watson's go-to wide receiver.

"If you get a good smack on somebody, you want to play defense," said Chaney, a junior. "And on offense, there's nothing like getting the ball and scoring."
That's why Chaney is excited about the Wildcats' new pistol offense. Although Chaney started the 2011 season's first two games behind center while Watson healed from a shoulder injury, Chaney was not on the field with Ninety Six's offense as much as he preferred.
Entering Friday's season opener against Emerald, Chaney will not only start at cornerback, he also will start at slot receiver. Chaney was receptive to the change, dating to the spring.
"At the end of last season, I wasn't getting much playing time on offense, mostly because Hunter was at quarterback," Chaney said. "And the coaches said they wanted to try me at receiver this year. And I said, 'OK, I'd like that.' And it progressed from there."

Two area teenagers involved in the 4-H youth development program received top honors July 25-28 at the 2012 State 4-H Congress at Clemson University. Casey Miller and Jordan Lake are both accomplished 4-Hers.
Casey Miller, 17, of Greenwood County's Kirksey community was named a National 4-H Conference delegate, and she is eligible for a trip to conference in Washington. D.C. With the award comes a $500 educational scholarship.
Additionally, Miller also won a National 4-H Congress scholarship, based on her state 4-H portfolio submitted in May and she completed an interview. The Congress honor includes a $500 educational scholarship and a trip to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. She was also recently selected as a 4-H Horse Ambassador.
Earlier this week, Miller competed at the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championships in Perry, Ga.

Miller got involved with Greenwood County 4-H activities at age 9. Her mom, Billie Miller, is currently a co-leader for the Ninety Six 4-H Horse Club, along with Lynn Rimsky. Casey Miller also is a state 4-H Horse Ambassador.
"I got my first horse at age 8 and got involved with 4-H the very next year," Casey Miller said.
Her father, David Miller, promised her she could have a horse when they moved from town to a rural part of the county.
"Within the horse project, I've competed in a lot of different events, including speed events such as barrels and poles, but I've also done the High School Rodeo Association and the National Barrell Horse Association," Casey Miller said.

Ninety Six MLB brings strong play to 'Cats' defense

Eddie Emery stands ready to help guide the Ninety Six High School defense this season. (Matt Walsh | Index-Journal)

By BEN BREINER

NINETY SIX - Eddie Emery found himself in a new world.
The Ninety Six High School football player had never experienced the constant preparation for football he ran into when he came to the South. Until the start of second semester last winter, he lived in Bloomsburg, Pa., where football was primarily an in-season pursuit.
So, he's had to plunge head-first into small-town Southern, small-town football, and he seems to have taken to it.
"We run and lift weights every day, four days out of the week," said Emery, who added his former school was about the size of Ninety Six. "Coming from a program that only started two weeks before school going two-a-days, it's been a lot different, but I feel it's been beneficial."

He's quickly become an integral member of the Wildcats and cuts the ideal image of a middle linebacker, where he will start at the heart of Ninety Six's new 3-5-3 defense. He said he played in the same scheme in Pennsylvania, and started as a freshman and sophomore before an anterior cruciate ligament tear knocked him out for his junior campaign.
But that was up north, and after joining the team for the last week of spring practices a few months ago, he rapidly grew into a leader.
"We spent three days together at FCA camp this summer, and I was a little nervous about coming from outside, especially from Pennsylvania to the Deep South, how he would respond to some of the things we do here," Ninety Six coach Chris Liner said. "He's really kind of taken it in stride and embraced it."
Emery hit his stride as soon as he arrived at Ninety Six, winning a state wrestling title in the 160-pound class in February and picking up a Class A pole vaulting state crown. Teammates and coaches said the wrestling background is particularly valuable because he's built the strength to fit the position, and is skilled in getting leverage to go lower than opponents.

In addition to a brand new school complex and concession stand facility, this upcoming school year brings the launch of a middle college program for the Ninety Six school district.
The middle college is a challenging new curriculum for Ninety Six's juniors and seniors designed by Piedmont Technical College.
"The middle college is a specific curriculum designed by Piedmont Tech where students can earn an associate degree and a high school diploma at approximately the same time," Ninety Six High School Principal Rex Ward said.

Students in the middle college program will take four college level courses each semester for two years. In the mornings, the students take their high school classes and Piedmont Tech classes in the afternoons.
A sample of middle college classes include art history and appreciation, general psychology, college algebra, biology and elementary Spanish. Some classes are taught by Piedmont Tech instructors, others by Ninety Six faculty.
Ward said the middle college started to take shape after the district's accreditation process last year.
"When AdvancED came through with accreditation last year, one of their recommendations was to have something in place for high achieving students," he said.
